This is one of the few times that I would be more comfortable with a
BSD-style license (again, minus the advertising clause). The protocol
will be trivial enough to reimplement if you are someone trying to
co-opt it, but we want this to be especially easy to implement for all
developers -- including those of non-free packages, for many of which
linking to an external library may be impractical or infeasible.
