The CDIN Project (http://www.cdin.org/) is also setting up a CDDB
replacement. We already have some server code operating for a newer
protocol. We also have code for compatibility with old CDDB clients.
IMO, the CDIN Project is working on a larger scope (client, server, and
protocols) with a bit more involvement from members of the open-source
community. We're fleshing out a nice spec now, yet we also have running
